The Anatomy of a Diamond
The structure of a diamond plays an important role in how it interacts with light and, ultimately, its brilliance and sparkle. The key elements include the crown, pavilion, table and girdle, while the cut and proportions of the diamond significantly influence its overall appearance.
The crown is the upper portion of the diamond, while the pavilion is the lower section beneath the girdle, extending towards the culet. The table is the flat facet at the top, and the girdle forms the outer edge, separating the crown and pavilion.
The cut determines how effectively light travels through the diamond. The angles and proportions of the crown and pavilion influence how light enters, travels through the stone and is reflected back towards the viewer, creating brightness, fire and scintillation.
The diamond’s depth and overall proportions are also important. If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, light can escape through the sides or bottom rather than being reflected through the crown, reducing its brilliance. When the proportions are well balanced, the diamond can interact with light more effectively, creating the bright, lively appearance we associate with a beautifully cut diamond.

This process ensures that diamonds are sourced from regions free from violence and human rights abuses. We partner with suppliers who comply with these standards, guaranteeing that our diamonds are responsibly and ethically mined.
Can I reuse my old diamond in the new design?
Yes! We’d be delighted to incorporate your existing diamond into your new bespoke design, giving it a fresh and meaningful life. We will assess the stone to ensure it’s suitable for the new setting and make recommendations based on its unique proportions. Please note that setting client-provided diamonds is done at your own risk, as we cannot guarantee their condition or durability, but we will handle them with the utmost care and expertise.
