When you’re getting married, a huge amount of attention is given to your engagement ring. And that’s a lovely thing. Because no matter how big, small, expensive or otherwise it is, your engagement ring is special. And you want other people to acknowledge it as so. With that being the case, wedding bands usually play second fiddle. But if you choose the wrong wedding band for your engagement ring style, the overall effect can be marred. Which is really frustrating, especially if you or your spouse has gone to the effort of designing a custom engagement ring. And given that you’ll have these things on your finger for – potentially – the rest of your life, that’s kind of a long time to live with the irritation!

So, how do you make sure that your wedding band matches – or complements – your engagement ring? We’ll talk you through the process

How to choose a wedding band to match your custom engagement ring

As with everything else related to your wedding, choosing a wedding band involves many decisions. So, it’s good idea to plan ahead. That way you won’t need to cut corners or find yourself needing to compromise.

These are the areas you need to consider.

Metal type

This is a bit of a sweeping statement, but on the whole, it’s a good idea to select a metal that matches your engagement ring. Contrasting band colours can work. But if you don’t want to detract from your engagement ring, coordination is a safer option.

Stones

Traditionally, the engagement ring has had all the bling. But in recent years, wearing stones in a wedding band has become increasingly popular. And it’s a great way to give your wedding band more character. But, again, it’s a good idea to match like with like. So, aim for similar stones in terms of both colour and cut.

Shape

Most importantly of all, when selecting a wedding band that harmonises with your custom engagement ring, is band shape. And for this, you have several options.

  • Slim wedding band – If your engagement ring has either a large, proud centre stone, or a band that has not been shaped, it is possible to pair it with a slim wedding band that simply sits underneath. It’s the most simplistic design of them all. But it works well and is worth considering.
  • Contoured wedding band. A contoured wedding band is designed to match the curvature of your engagement ring. Which typically means that the front of the ring will be straight at the back and shaped at the front, to accommodate the contour of your engagement ring. This allows the two to sit perfectly flush on the finger.
  • Notched wedding band. The notched wedding band works on a similar premise to the contoured band. But rather than having a shaped font, the whole band will be straight, with a notch cut into the metal to accommodate the stone of your engagement ring.
  • Contoured and notched wedding band. If your engagement ring has a large or elongated centre stone with fine detailing around it, you may need a band that combines the contoured and notched design.

If you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to talk to a jeweller before making your purchase.

Style

The style of your engagement ring should influence the style of your wedding band if you want them to look like they belong together. So, try to avoid mixing old with new. If your custom engagement ring was art deco inspired, then don’t go for an ultra-contemporary wedding band.

Consider buying bespoke

If you have a custom engagement ring, a bespoke wedding band can often provide the best solution. It’s the easiest way to ensure that the two rings share an aesthetic. And to make sure that they fit comfortably together, particularly if your engagement ring has an ornate or unusual shape. If you’re really organised, you can even get them made at the same time, making them true twins!
